About the Book:
This book “Decoding Indian Politics” is a collection of articles published in the prestigious Delhi-based weekly journal Mainstream from the middle of 2020 to the end of 2025. As a student and teacher of Political Science for over 45 years, the author has, from time to time, written articles on major issues in Indian Politics, covering national, state and foreign policy/international arenas. Accordingly, this book consists of articles on national issues like the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha elections, the role of Political Parties and their leaders in the selection of candidates for elections, mostly on caste and winnability considerations, increasing role of money power and the importance of or the absence of Party manifestos, including mostly populist promises in the garb of welfare schemes. The need for reforming the Political Parties is also highlighted. Articles about the State Assembly Elections are also written from similar perspectives. The section on foreign policy/international issues deals with India’s bilateral relations with some selected countries. It also covers issues like the on-going Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Israel-Iran war and Operation Sindhoor. Also dealt with is the long pending need for reforming the UN Security Council, along with a plea for India being made a permanent member of it and finally India’s role in the Global South.
